I have been playing some DONs the last couple days and haven't played them for about a year. I remember them being very soft and easy when I first played them with people throwing chips around like monkeys and you could almost be profitable just by sitting out but they seem to have tightened way up.

Are there a lot more regulars sitting at the DONs now because of lower variance? And have most people learned to play them differently?

yes... DON's are hard to beat these days because such sites as "pokerstrategy.com" wrote strategies how to play those and there are a lot of regs there... It's hard to play them... especially on Stars ...

the play has definitely gotten much better since the first few months these came out but if you are a good player you can beat them at the higher levels.

Early uber-tight, mostly when blinds go semi high its ICM time, stick to this and your EV+ in the long run for sure.
