For me, I've always loved the idea of being able to make money, and even earn a living, without being tied down. With poker, you're free to make your own schedule and you don't have to be in any specific location. I find that even though I often put much more time and effort into playing and studying poker then I'd need to with most regular jobs, I always have free time when I need it.

Why did you start playing poker and what keeps you going?

I caught the bug when I went to my first home game with a bunch of co-workers. I had never played before then. It was a friendly little game, just a $20NLHE cash game. And of course that first night, I lost my $20. And then, being the competitive person that I am, I decided I need to figure out what the hell I'm doing. So I went and bought a poker book. I continued to study the game and started consistently winning...which in this particular home game wasn't really hard, just an hour or so into the game I would always be the only sober one at the table.

Pretty typical poker story I guess. I eventually decided to try the online thing. I think my first deposit was on UB. I would do ok with my initial $50 deposit, but I didn't know anything about bankroll management, so I eventually went bust. It probably took me about 3 deposits before I finally could sustain. Until recently, poker was just a profitable hobby. But now I've gotten a bit more serious, and am determined to grow my BR and make a good living.

Thinking of the traveling that I'll be able to do is what keeps me going...not being tied down to a job, being my own boss...and of course the things I will be able to buy. Smile Big

Started being involved with poker as a past time while working (lol).

A few colleagues were playing online and I thought I'd give it a go. I didn't have any bit of trust in all these "gambling sites" and I was sure it's all a scam to just take your money away and (probably) your credit card info to boot Smile

Play money on Poker Stars was the beginning for me. Real money? On these "scam sites"? lol

Not to mention my level of poker play was going as far as knowing what a straight and flush is. I wasn't sure if a flush is better than a straight or if the suited cards in a flush need to be consecutive or not (don't laugh Smile)

Anyway I caught up pretty quick (I'm not retarded) but still had no clue on how to play. LUCKILY I stumbled upon a few poker training video and had the revelation there is more to poker than just playing some cards and getting lucky to catch a certain card combination.

I would have given up on it fast otherwise. I don't like gambling alone. I would do it once in a blue moon and with low amounts. I like playing games were at least some skill is involved and where your chance of winning is better than just a throw of dice.

That was 1 year ago. 1 year later I am still learning. Went through SNG, cash games, tournaments and SNG again. Mostly breaking even - because I hate reloading (unless there is some bonus involved) Smile

What keeps me going? The feeling that I know I am getting better at it with each and every step. Knowing that just as so many people "made it" I can make it as well (again, I am not retarded). I enjoy playing it. And I want the freedom and flexibility it brings.

Yey!

Well because i was always a math loving boy,and thought that i could dominate others if i just study the game, but tilting and bad beats are way ahead of my success, but i just started few months ago, maybe i am going to show profit and not breaking even so often!

i started playing just for the fun of it after watching and getting interested in it from ESPN i remember prior to that i would always think that poker was almost a no - brainer skill game... now i can see that is not so true :P

My father taught me to play poker when I was about 5. I had seen him playing 5 card draw with his buddys and I thought it was cool and wanted to play. He made me memorize the hand rankings and be able to show him what each one was. Then he made me learn how to shuffle. I was the only 5 year old in town that could riffle a deck of cards Smile.

Anyways, he made me get out my piggy bank (which had 78 cents in it) and we played poker. As you can imagine, it didn't take him long to wipe me out. I asked him to give back the 78 cents so we could play again.

He stood up from the table, put the 78 cents in his pocket and said to me, "Poker lesson number 1: never gamble something you can't afford to lose. We will play again after you get your allowance."

I've always kept that lesson close to the top of my mind when dealing with bankroll management. I'm currently trying to "Ferguson" my way up on FTP. I started with 0 and have got myself up to 400+ dollars.

Pretty much everyone who's ever set foot inside a casino has caught the craps bug at least once. You should be able to freely admit if you fall into this broad category. There's no shame in it, even if you've never been able to win a single dollar playing craps. Heck, even if you had to refinance your house, sell your vintage motorcycle collection and send your kids to a bartending academy instead of the Ivy League schools they had their little hearts set on, there's still no shame.

Poker on facebook... lol. Everyone was done with Tetris, i'd trashed the sprint score and was high enough up in marathon not to bother.. so I thought i'd give this poker thing a try :P

Ran hot, played horrible, but had a friend who was playing online for money for the first time at the same time as me. He'd put $30 on stars and i kind of picked up basic aspects of the game just by chatting to him about how he was doing. I started to rail him and caught a few of his deep runs in 180mans and really got the bug.

I started up on stars with the intention of learning more at play money stakes as i'd hoped the field would be somewhat better so I could play actual poker against them. Ofc this was a pipe dream, they were all shocking and pots were just shipping it in pre and rubbish like that. But then one day I checked my account balance and saw $2.00 of real money... haven't looked back since Surprise

Always loved card games as a kid. Saw hold'em on tv about 5 years ago and thought it looked almost as cool as me. They told me i could play for free and i was pretty cheap and broke (about a 50/50 mix there)so figured i'd give it a go. Learned the basics but there's only so much you can learn playing for free with the whole table going all in every hand with nothing. Lol so i started trying to convert my play chips into real money! It was only like a million of them to enter a tournament where you could win a whole dollar!!!!!!! only because i refused to resort to using my credit card and the whole cheap thing of course.A month in I actually won a huge freeroll satellite to another freeroll where only first got anything. Took down a field of about 240,000 people to take first and a trip to vegas for the WSOP and have been hooked since.

Online casino gambling is one of the most profitable industries on the internet today. You play and gamble on the games of your choice sitting at home, without bothering about reservations for air fare or hotels. The player has the advantage of playing in the peace and quiet of his home without the noise associated or anxiety inducing factors found in an actual casino. There is no one watching you win or lose in your own home as opposed to the many other patrons at the casino.

Always loved card games but had never heard of poker until i saw it one night on Sky tv back in about 1999. The likes of Devil Fish, Mad mart, the Hebdon Mob etc, real characters with personality, thats what got me started. The first game i played was on Party Poker back in 2003, i played for play money on weekends or any free time i had when not at Uni.

In 2005 i Deposited on Paradise Poker and won 2 $50 Sngs back to back and that was me hooked. Back then the game online was still in its infancy and was much less aggressive. I was soon playing in the big MTTs online and in the space of a few months i had made many final tables although i was still totally clueless, had never even read a poker book. I soon lost a lot of money playing out of my BR, playing when drunk and one day went to deposit only to find i had no funds in my bank, it wasnt a very merry xmas that year.

I took a break for a while then Paradise Poker was sold and the site was never the same again, enter Poker Stars 2005. It was only in about 2007-2008 that i started to have a little success but having no BR managment still meant i wasnt a winning player. I have given up on the idea of playing MTTs, due to the huge fields, i simply cant handle the swings, it got to the stage where i was running deep time and time again to simply suffer bad beats, i ran so bad for a year that i almost gave up altogether.

However i have worked hard all summer to BR myself playing in Sngs, and am currently practicing multi tableing small stakes Sngs. I can play about 10 or so at once and i dont think it willl be long before thats 20, and thats what keeps me going, the knowledge that i can make money playing if i stick to a good strategy and dont chase the big bucks. So thats where i am right now, finally playing more and thinking less, having fun doing it too, the varience in Sngs is virtually non existant in comparison to Mtts, which is a welcome change.

I still play the occasional small stakes Mtt for fun, and my friends and i love a good home game, its my passion and if i can make a few quid doing it then what could be a better way to spend your time.

I started playing poker with my older brother when I was very young. We would play a live game with his friends once a month, betting chips, pretzels, M&Ms, that sort of thing. Once he graduated I stopped playing poker and didn't think about it for awhile. I had a roofing accident last year and am now under 'house arrest': I can't walk anymore. I spend a lot of my time online nowadays ie online poker. I do it because it keeps me sane. I haven't won too much but I am confident karma will bring some big winnings to me.

He occassionally likes to get online, for a special occasion, and play a couple of rounds. He'll have a set amount, something like $100 or $250 and just play until he's toast.

I don't personally get it, 'playing' online from the comfort of home is appealing, but how honest is online poker really? A multi-billion dollar industry, at least in a Casino you could try to count physical cards...

Play the second round as the first. conservative play first, then be aggressive in the final rounds. There are 28 hands in the second round of play and the top two players advance to the final round.

Started playing poker because of the money. The same as the original post. It seemed like a challenge and the idea of making money on the side while playing a challenging game was the draw. It is still challenging, which is why I keep coming back for more. Smile

Started watching Sky Poker about 18 months ago and got hooked. Also, had a mate who plays alot of online poker so got a few pointers from him but could only break-even at best. I started watching a few online instructional videos on SnG's a few months back and have been making modest profits since. I'm still learning the game so hopefully my profits will increase two and threefold over the next few months Smile

When a party simply outlined how the game works in this part you will learn exactly what makes the action by the action of a real hand and the end will be able to go play.

Lots of poker on tv where I live is what got me interested in playing online (had played poker as a kid, but never NLHE & never any tournament play). A buddy of mine was playin' around with micro stakes on Stars & AP. Listening to his experience got me to make a couple of deposits.
Basically started as a hobby/pastime....pretty much playing now for the same reasons.
