Get To Where You Wanna Be

Its been a long time bloggin' (for me anyways), and I'm now currently 18 tabling $16s, and gonna start mixing in some $27s. At the beginning of the year, switching to Stars and Turbo SNGs was something that I wanted to do, and I wanted to get to the $16s and eventually Supernova. Its funny how I started with the $3s, and slowly moved up up up! I wonder how many guys have done the same thing as me?

I've never doubted my ability to get volume in, which is the reason that Supernova seems so obtainable, even when I was grinding the $3s. But what I didn't realise was how bad at SNGs I was, and how winning at the $3s was actually a bad thing for me, because it took me longer to accept.

I have a friend who 5 years ago won a satilite to a live final table, where 10 players played for $10,000 and he won it. All ten players got entered into a $10k London Open, where he came 13th for another $30k. Now? Busto. What does someone do with this sudden amount of money and success? How is anyone meant to be able to mentally handle themselves after a win like this? In the short term you win loads, but in the long run it can be bad coz you think your the nuts when your not, and play high when you think you "deserve" to be there. He now thinks online is rigged, and he's the nuts live. Can you ever say anything to a friend when the answer is always "But I'm a good player, I've won $40k?". Strangely enough, cashing big twice doesn't mean your a winning player...

So my ego was high in Jan, Feb and March was a big lesson for me. Accepting I was not a good player and getting help was the most profitable thing I've ever done! Help is out there, from the best too, but yet so many players have such big egos, and think that getting help means that they're a failure. But that's their loss, and my gain as I collect their chips.

Since then its been up and off. I don't think I've ever seen anyone have an insane graph as mine now. 6500 breakeven/losing games, and then boom! I did a lot of studying in April, and May I've tried to get my volume back with everything I've learned. As well as that I've decided to keep getting coached at least once a month to keep me in check, and more recently after reading Dusty Schmidt's book decided to not look at my cashier until the end of the day, which has really helped me cope with the huge jumps in numbers when moving to higher stakes.

Many BOP bonuses, prop bet winnings, and more recently unlocking a cashout bonus has allowed my roll to skyrocket. I'm more confident then ever, but ever more humble in the fact that I am still not even half as good as the top guys. But one thing I can do is put in the volume and grind my way into that sharkscope leaderboard. And that is a guarantee!

Everyday I'm learning, trying to be better then yesterday's me. The money's good but not the all, I just try to keep focused and work hard and the results will come.

I love my graph. I love the fact that I have a stupid amount of games before I start winning. I'm happy to show this insanity and to me its like an important reminder of my perseverance. I'm no stat resetter, nothing to hide, and am happy to show my good, bad and the ugly.

True dat. I got friends who got a couple lucky big cash wins and think they are the shit yet they can not obtain the money coming in. I consider this a job so I prefer the hourly rate anyways, but anyone can hit a big cash, question is can you keep climbing. Most of their graphs are way up then slowly come way back down such a shame. You have done well in these sngs so keep it up. Im still learning the sng mtts so hopefully I can catch up on your volume cutie. Keep it rolling.

hey puyan

i think my poker career is pretty much like yours.. in terms of .. "thinking i can crush" games then having to lower my ego cause of poor results... but i think all students of poker go through this... pretty standard i reckon... no amatuer comes out on to the poker scene and just crush games... there is a learning curve ....

and as for your friend winning big... all i can say is people go on some sick runs... some times when its down to there last $$ in the BR... i once randomly decided stake a friend in the daily doulbe on FT and then i went to sleep ( while he was grinding at my place) and when i woke up he was HU .. was pretty sick..

oh also.. just to let you know not all people go busto with a sudden rise in fortune... for myself... i randomly won a all expenses trip for the World Cup of Poker on Stars to the Bahamas early last year and our team came second for 14.5k each.. from that i just used it to grind out more money, but i also spent a good amount before i thought i had grind Smile

You're doing great dude! I've been following your blog for ages and I'm enjoying your new found success vicariously since I've had to cut back on the hours i can put in myself Smile

Keep it up and keep blogging!

Whereabouts in the UK do you live btw?

Thanks buddy! I'm enjoying your use of the word "vicariously" lol. Learns something new every day innit!

I live in Milton Keynes atm, which is just a few miles north of London.

You can't beat learning. Smile I live in Stratford Upon Avon.

It'd be good to get a friendly poker game going somewhere. Like with other Sharkscopers. It'd be great to play and then discuss the hands. Probably not easy to organise though!
