Find Your Coach!
I'm so glad I found a great coach to help me achieve my goal. There's nothing better then to get a bit of guidance, and that combined with hard work will ultimately = $$$. All I can say is that I've found it easier to pay to get better at poker since joining PokerVT, and once you swallow your pride you will improve without a doubt.
Of course there are a whole bunch of guys who are great players, but not good teachers, and more scarily there are another bunch of ppl who are not even good at poker and think they are and think that they can teach. Beware!! (So scary I knew this guy from 10 years ago!!)So here's my mini guide to gettin' some help;
1. Identify your game. Pick one game. Stick to it.
No point in trying omaha hi low as well as learning 90 man SNGs, you wanna really try to be the best in your field, and rip it! Its gonna take a lot of time and effort, so all this energy should be focused in that one game.
2. Find the Coaches. 1000 x Make sure he has experience playing not just your game (duuuh), but also the stake level too!
If he's a SNG master, but plays $100 buy ins +, the stuff he teaches might not be relevant to your $10 SNGs. Yes, they'll have the fundamentals for sure, but what better then to have someone who goes through the same shit that you do at your stake?
3. Do your research. Sharkscope his ass. Read his blogs. Find and watch his vids if there any to get an idea of his teaching style.
Make sure he's a winning player. Make sure he's good at explaining stuff. Maaaaake sure he's not Jason Ho! Yes I'm linking this twice, but its sooooo bad, and everyone should be aware that there are assholes out there ready to scam you!
4. Contact him!
PM through 2+2 or blogs or whatever. Try to identify your leaks, or if you don't know what they are then maybe a sweat session or recorded session to send to him would be good. Keep communicating, AIM & Skype!
5. Keep having sessions... even after you start winning.
This is another biggie too. A lot of guys just have one session and that's it. The coach is offering his wisdom, guidence, and you cant learn it all in one session! There's so much more to learn, so keep having sessions now and then. Its always good to have an impartial observer as well to watch what your doing and help you improve.
I've always said that it surprises me how many guys refuse to swallow their pride and pay for someone to teach them how to be a better player. If your a salesman, wouldn't you pay to go to the no.1 saleman conference to learn all you can? Same thing. Pay money to make money... then it pays for itself.
