The BAD

This was a genuine attempt to make some money and I came close. I cashed but a measelly $10 profit was not what I had in mind....I was dreaming of glory and the $1000 top prize. 330 entrants and I did ok I think, by the end I had lost any vestige of fold equity and in honesty a double here might not have helped that much.

The very UGLY

This is inexcusable on every level. I have screwed myself several times making min raises under the gun with strong hands....but I dont seem to learn. The terrible truth is that this hand might not be an isolated incident Wink It might be representative of my game.... What is more, I KNEW the villain to be a dangermouse, he is an old hand on BF. I have a special kind of Poker Tourette's Syndrome and need medical help.

What is the logic behind min raising pre-flop? I just don't get it and never do it. I pretty consistently raise 3x the BB until you've got less than about 12.5 BBs then it's all in or fold for me.

You got exactly what you deserved.

It's not the most puzzling thing that people do though - that's min raising into a huge pot post flop.

I just played a tournament today when someone bet 20 into a pot with 2200 in it and with two other players to act. Why? What could you possibly acheive with that. It is just staggeringly stupid.

I did indeed - I never min raise .......except utg with a big hand ......it is clearly not logical and it is clearly wrong.....motivated by greed (wanting everyone's money all at once), it is a short cut to Potter's Field.

OK, since I am on holiday and RARELY post on your blog, here are my thoughts on these hands.

Hand 1 - what you do with AA entirely depends on the type of opponent you are playing against. Obviously don't fold it (!) but if your opponent is loose or aggressive or both, then you can bet all the way (if he has second pair or straight draw etc he will call/raise all streets), but if he isn't that sort of player you may need to set traps by either limping pre or checking one or more streets postflop. As played he made a terrible river push with a hand that actually had some showdown value and was only getting called if you had the Ace or the straight/FH (depending on how bad he thought you were of course).

Hand 2 - you were down to 5bb, got dealt QQ, pushed, got called by worse and lost a 70-30. Standard. You probably didn't have much fold equity but then again you don't want your opponents to fold when you have Queens so overall no regrets here!

Hand 3 - most interesting of the 3. What you do with KK UTG again depends on table tendency. Against superwild tables you can make a big preflop raise or even openpush (!) and hope you get a caller (it is a 2 dollar STT after all). If it is an aggro table you could even limp and hope someone raises you. Or you can do anything in between and it wouldn't be a mathematical error. Including a minraise. In a vaccum, the best play is probably a 3-4x raise.

The key to this hand was not the preflop play but the postflop play. What the minraise did was invite people in preflop which meant you had to play better postflop. Postflop is where it gets complicated. There are probably various ways to play this and again it depends on the players.

I think a bet on the flop is standard, however you could probably make it a bit less than pot. Why? Because if you make a big bet, this increases the pot size and means you go busto on the turn by being pot committed (which is what happened). As played, you bet pot and got one caller. As you stated, johnnielove is a leaderboard winner and will not be calling you light here in a 3 way pot. But he could be on a draw etc or have a 10.

Turn does not look good, but on further inspection if he has turned 2 pair (eg Q10) you are still ahead with Kings up and he virtually never has QQ for the FH. There are now 2 flush draws on board, but realistically the Heart draw is the only one he could have and you have one of his blockers, so you don't need to bet big on the turn, if at all. Two ways to play this - one, check for pot control and fold if he makes a large bet, or if you pick up a timing tell, otherwise call and reassess on river. Method two, bet small (like 1/3rd pot) and if he raises you probably have to dump it. He is supposed to be a big winning player at these stakes and I can't see him raising unless he has a straight, trips or full boat.

As played, you bet very large, he raised, you felt committed and called and lost to trips. Not dreadful I guess as it is a small stakes STT and he could have something like Q10, however given your read on the player, you can fold this (note: much easier to do if you bet smaller).

Only my opinion, anyone can feel free to disagree! Smile

Ok - the small versus large bet thing.....I am convinced these muppets at the $2 / $5 STTs who think they are pros multitabling take no notice of standard raises, they toss all their chips into the middle on crazy bluffs if there is the slightest wiff of weakness....sometimes I spot them and call, often I fold. I think the really really stupid thing here was that I knew I was beat, knew the villain was solid, and I just kept banging my head suicidally against the wall. I am bored. And officially, on TILT as i THREW a game last night because I stopped caring. Time to slow down (and probably reduce my bet sizes and fold to the silly bluffs Wink ). Tried to call you to wish you happy Christmas Felix but as usual no answer! Programme the stalkers numbers into your phone so you know who is calling you.

Hope you had a great Christmas too. Smile

Problem with stalkers numbers is they keep changing them so you can't keep ahead of them by programming their numbers in!

I have done an about turn on the KK hand, I was probably being too cautious (and results oriented - maybe next time don't post the outcome?) and think it would probably be fine to just stick it all in on the turn (or bet then call raise as you did). I think you were just unlucky he had trips. Mostly he has A10, QJ, Q10 or a straight or flush draw so you can value bet shove the turn and hope he calls with worse (or folds a draw that may beat you).

As for people bluff raising you when you bet small, yeah they probably do it a lot at small stakes as the money means little etc. My best solution is to generally bet hands I will call an all in with. Otherwise I just check and make a decision depending on their bet size and my relative hand strength.

Incidentally their bluff raising strategy is flawed. To paraphrase Dan Harrington in his classic book - even though bluffing is less successful online, you will see it attempted a lot more often (than in live poker).
