How to calculate confidence intervals on your ROI

Here's a quick a tutorial if you are interested in calculating confidence intervals for your ROI.

To do this you don't need any knowledge of stats but you do need sharkscope (subscribers only as you need advanced search capability) and Excel.

Confidence intervals around a mean in statistics are usually given using standard errors. Here's how to calculate the standard error for your mean ROI.

1) Do an advanced search using Sharkscope for the type of tournament you are interested in.

Here's mine for 5$ 9 seaters Holdem Normal speed on Stars

Latest Leaderboard run update

I've now reached 150 games into my run at the $2.01-$5 Holdem turbo average profit leaderboard using my Cereus account.

A very good set of 50 games making $2.94 per game with an ROI of 54%.

So my overall average profit after 150 games is up to $1.88 with an ROI of 34%. This would be good enough for first if I can keep it going for another 350 games.

So its so far, so good.

Here's the chart for the 150 games so far.

My Global Alias graphs for 2009 and 2010

Thanks to Voland's blog I've just discovered how to create a global alias and thus work out my combined overall stats across sites. This is really useful and I thought worthy of a blog entry. I only managed to play 685 tournaments last year. I aim to at least double that this year or it's going to take me ages to play the 500 tournies needed for my average profit leaderboard runs.

Here's my combined 2009 data for Stars and Cereus

Games Played 685
Average Profit $2.58
Average Stake $10
Average ROI 26%
Total Profit $1,765

Bankroll Management

I've developed a bankroll management strategy to allow players to shift between different types of tables. I've done it for Pokerstars as that's where I usually play.

Many players concentrate on one type of tournament and have a pretty good idea what they should maintain their bankroll at when cashing out to avoid going bust. However, players also sometimes like to switch to a different type of table. So I have generated a lookup table which will allow you to set your new minimum bankroll based upon your old one.

2010 so far

I've been having terrible problems with my broadband (no internet 9 days so far in 2010 at home) but I've finally got it sorted after lots of swearing at the rather inept staff AOL seem to employ in their Indian calls centres.

So hopefully I'll be able to play a bit more.

Had a good start to the year on Stars when I actually have been able to play.

Leaderboard Run

It's a been a while since I did any leaderboard run updates.

I've reached 100 games in my attempt to get on the $5.01-$15 6-seater Holdem Normal Speed Average Profit leaderboard.

I started playing about 50 $6 games and then switched to the $12 tables. It's obvious on the graph where i switched.

I'm going at $3.49 per game with an ROI of 35%. This would just sneak me on the leaderboard in 20th. However, I'm making nearly 5$ a game on the $12 tables which would push me up into 2nd so I won't play anymore $6 games.

January 2010

Well a pretty good month overall.

Up $628 (including Cereus winnings) plus sitting joint second in the DoN competition which I guess is worth $150 (??).

I've played 100 tournies on Stars making $5.65 per game with an ROI of 34%
So if I had reset my stats at the start of the year I'd have a shark symbol. I'd didn't of course as I would lose my gold star.

I've tried to play more tables in the $23-36 range.

I played 30 making $5.35 as game with a 9% ROI.

In the $5-15 range where I usually play I notched up 69 tables making $5.78 with an ROI of 45%.
